Fortune Cookie

We ate out at a Chinese restaurant this evening. Nicole's fortune said "Play Lottery today. Lady Luck is upon you". Unusual fortune we thought. We all agreed - except for one dissenter - that we should buy lottery tickets TODAY. Michael argued against the logic of buying lottery tickets at all - and buying it because a fortune cookie said you should, well ... seemed even less logical.

We picked up 'Lucky Birthday', 'Holiday Cash', and 'Fortune Cookie' scratch off tickets. We gave Michael the 'Fortune Cookie' ticket. Cheryl scratched off the 'Lucky Birthday' ticket - no winner. Nicole scratched off the 'Holiday Cash' ticket - no winner. Michael scratched off the 'Fortune Cookie' ticket .... and won ! His take home is $20 dollars. He and Nicole are splitting the winnings. So much for logic !

NICE! I'm not trying to advocate gambling for any one, regardless of age, etc., but you gotta' admit it IS kinda' exciting/fun scratching that card and seeing that you got a "winner.....Any comments Michael? Nicole?.......Mitch

There is a word (2 words) for it.
BEGINNER'S LUCK

And you feel the strangeness of such an event as the laws of probability seemed to have been violated.

Hey, he twisted the story. I wasn't against lotteries in principle - only against the fact that their decision to partake in this one came from a fortune cookie. They had pointed to my win as evidence that the lottery is a good thing and I countered that by saying that for every $20 we put in, we will on average *not* get $20 back. He might have interpreted that as a sweeping statement about the logic behind lotteries but it was only a counterargument. I just couldn't believe we let the fortune cookie decide.

while it seems like too much of a coincidence, one has to realize that it was nicole, not michael, who received the fortune. if the fortune and the lottery were truly related, then nicole would have won on "holiday cash." and besides, how can "lady luck" apply to michael? sorry to burst the bubble :)

alright Evan, you made a good first point. It should have been Nicole's ticket that was the winner! However, regarding your second point--'lady luck' is just an expression that applies to both males and females, so i'd have to argue that a bubble has not yet been completely burst.

Now, maybe I'm out of my league as per the logistics of trial and error principles, but I'm just a simple man - so back to my original question: What did it FEEL like as you are scratching, and a $20 winner appears!?...Please share........Mitch

It is interesting that you should ask that question, Mitch,"How did it feel when you won?" I also have never won anything, except once , years ago i won a prize for Best Short Story at a writer's conference. but never any money.
Evan, and Michael did you ever win a lottery money? AND is winning money as good a feeling as winning a prize for something you've done?
What do you think?

Hey Mitch, What did we feel? We had a really good laugh :-) Peter

Mitch - It felt like a bad coincidence. My worst nightmare. Wrong place at the wrong time.

Grandma - Winning money feels like oblivion to me. I must've been vaccinated against the stuff when I was young.

That's interesting...Win or lose, I have always enjoyed the feeling or T

That's interesting.....Win or lose, I've always enjoyed playing, or as some call "the action". Guess Michael and I received different vaccinations....Mitch

Hey Mike, sure hope you're not saying you're immune to money-- believe you're gonna need some one day.
